About Coach Cathy Casey
I started running with my dad when I was 7 and fell in love with running at an early age. I earned a scholarship to run for the University of Texas in college. After college and a brief stint in advertising, I followed my passion for running into coaching and coached Track and Field and Cross Country at Southern Methodist University for 18 years.
I continued competing but switched from track to marathons. I have also competed in many Ironmans and triathlons.
As a coach of 20+ years, I believe in working hard every single day and making race day your celebration. You have to have fun with running – remember it is something you get to do - not have to do. Being surrounded by a great team will lift you to heights you could never achieve alone. Surround yourself with great people.
Best advice: Listen to your body and don’t be afraid of rest.
I have coached conference champions, NCAA All-Americans, Olympics Trials Qualifiers, and adult athletes of all levels. Regardless of the level, I love coaching athletes who are chasing big goals.
What To Expect
Coaching: First and foremost, Coach Cathy and Coach Dodds are both here to Coach you. This is not a generic app subscription. We have proactively anticipated your need for each week of training and will speak to these considerations during each week’s podcast recording. Furthermore, the coaches are actively engaged on the message boards to answer your personal questions. It will simply be your job to ask those questions via the discussion board. The more our coaches get to know you, the more they can shape the training to fit your needs.
Training Macro: At the start of each season, we post a long run plan so you know how many miles to run each weekend leading up to Boston. We also have a quality workout progression scripted and posted. We include the name of the workout in the macro and we will make a post every week that includes the finer details like the pace target, recovery splits, and total time and distance. We also cover the details of the workouts in the recording itself so you know what to do, how you should feel, how to modify it if you're overcooking or experience a setback, etc. Our coaches are also here to help you structure your week as we know some will execute a quality workout on a Wednesday, while others may execute theirs on a Monday. We design the workouts and help you space out the week but you best know your personal schedule and work schedule. Hence, there is some natural flexibility regarding days of the week for training.
Weekly Private Podcast Recording: In addition to the workout descriptions and details, we will also cover content regarding common & relevant topics, team questions from the message boards, occasional drop-ins by Coach Chris McClung, and teammate interviews. We love to invite a team member at a time to record with us and share your story and background. We have found these are the most cherished as it helps you get to know a little more about the people you’ll be racing with and regularly giving kudos to on Strava .
Strength Resources: We have two strength resources posted in our virtual platform for you. One is for those who like an established program that builds on itself weekly. The other is an ad hoc approach for circuits designed for those who know they need to establish a strength routine but “simply haven’t done so yet.” ;) (No judgement here. We know runners! ) Our resource tab will also include pace charts, a “Rogue Terminology” sheet, dynamic warm up routine and recovery plan for post race.
Private Strava Group: While a Strava account is not required, we will invite you to join our private group, exclusive to this team and coaches. This is not only a great way for you to support one another, it also helps us better answer your personal questions regarding target paces, modifications, etc.
Community: In our virtual platform, we have a tab titled “Open Discussion.” This thread has allowed us to connect more as a community despite being in different states and countries. This thread is also the primary way our coaches interact with you as athletes. It’s also a place to share about a great run, an epiphany that hit you during training, a question about upcoming travel and how to adjust, interesting topics that naturally arise in the world of running, and an endless array of other topics that are relevant to you all as a training community. We’ve been genuinely pleased with the level of connection we’ve seen amongst our virtual teams and trust it will be the same for you all as well.
